Petit Theft

Petty theft, often referred to as petit theft in Florida, involves the theft of property that is valued below a certain threshold. This is classified into two degrees:

• Second Degree Petit Theft: Involves property valued at less than $100. It is considered a misdemeanor of the second degree.
• First Degree Petit Theft: Involves property valued between $100 and $750. It is treated as a misdemeanor of the first degree.

Despite being regarded as a lesser crime, a conviction can still result in significant fines, probation, and even jail time.

Grand Theft

Grand theft is a more serious offense and is categorized based on the value and type of property stolen:

• Third Degree Grand Theft: Property stolen is valued between $750 and $20,000, or includes certain specified properties like firearms or motor vehicles.
• Second Degree Grand Theft: Involves property valued between $20,000 and $100,000.
• First Degree Grand Theft: Property valued over $100,000 or cargo worth $50,000 or more.

Grand theft can result in substantial fines, long-term imprisonment, and a permanent mark on your criminal record.

Retail Theft (Shoplifting)

Shoplifting involves taking merchandise from a retail establishment without paying for it. Florida law treats this crime seriously, especially when organized schemes or devices to circumvent security systems are involved.

Burglary And Robbery

Although often associated with theft, burglary and robbery are distinct crimes:

• Burglary involves entering a structure or conveyance with the intent to commit an offense therein without permission.
• Robbery is the taking of money or property from another person, with the intent to permanently or temporarily deprive the person of the money or property, by force, violence, assault, or putting in fear.

Employee Theft

Employee theft involves stealing from an employer. It can range from pilfering small items or cash to embezzling large sums or misappropriating substantial assets.

Identity Theft

This involves the unauthorized use of another person's personal identification information to commit fraud or other crimes. This can include credit card fraud, medical identity theft, and more.
